Our premiere at the BFI

We wanted to share the good news that the short movie Pretty Fly for A Doña (2022, Karlina Veras) had its premiere at the BFI on July 11th as part of the Female Film Club Festival.

Film Locos has always bet on the hidden talents in our community, nurturing them and supporting them as they ladder up. That was exactly the case of Pretty Fly for A Doña. Time always filters what’s good.

From a collective initiative to the BFI

Back in 2021, Film Locos ran a collective shorts season in which participants would collaborate in each other’s projects as well as enjoy the showcasing of 6 short movies. (Check the link here). Among them, Pretty Fly for A Doña, a comedy about an elderly South-American woman who finds a Tinder date against the wishes of her daughter. Truly focused on female-leader characters, the short is a fun tale of matriarchal bonds within South American families. Actors Rosa C. Diaz and Maria Constanza Velez play the driving force in their family – they really do what they want, independently of the father and husband figure, played by Victor Rios.

The initial premise that guided the filmmaking found its way to The Female Film Club. The Female Film Club (FFC) is a supportive community designed to empower women filmmakers at all stages of their careers through networking, education, and collaboration.

Founded in August 2020 by Nicole Lieberman and Liza van der Smissen, the club focuses on connecting women in the film industry, providing resources, and fostering a sense of community among its members. Naturally Females Film Club’s mission aligns with that of Film Locos.

At the Film Festival premiere the screening was sold out. Held at the prestigious BFI cinema (Stephen Street unit), the audience felt part of the movement. Together we celebrated women behind and on the screen, joining forces for what consisted of a sort of transformational experience.

Film Locos is proud of the support we continue to give to filmmakers such as Karlina Veras. What is happening is a labour of love. Keep coming to our events and screenings.
